Colorimetry (HIDDEN PAGE - aiysha wants this service ft in future)

At Wickersley Eye Clinic, we understand how frustrating reading can be when words appear uncomfortable or difficult to focus on. For some patients, this may be linked to visual stress, a condition that can affect both children and adults and make reading tiring or unpleasant. Our colourimetry service explores how colour may help reduce this discomfort and make reading feel easier and more natural.

What is visual stress?

Visual stress is used to describe visual discomfort and distortions that occur when reading. It can affect people of all ages and is commonly associated with dyslexia, although it can also be experienced by those without any formal diagnosis.

Some patients find that text appears distorted or uncomfortable, which can make reading for longer periods challenging. Research suggests that colour can help improve reading speed, comfort and accuracy for some individuals. Coloured overlays, tinted spectacle lenses or contact lenses may help reduce symptoms and allow more comfortable reading.

Common symptoms of visual stress

You or your child may be experiencing visual stress if reading causes:

  • Tiredness or discomfort after a short time

  • Letters appearing to move, blur, or change size

  • Coloured halos or shadows around text

  • Red, sore or watery eyes

  • Patterns or glare on the page

If these symptoms sound familiar, we’re here to help.

Is colour the right solution?

The first step is always a full eye examination (link to eye exam page). It’s important to check that vision is clear and that no underlying eye conditions or uncorrected prescription are contributing to the problem.

If glasses alone do not relieve symptoms of eye strain or visual discomfort, a colour-based assessment may be recommended as the next step.

Coloured overlay assessment

Our optometrist can carry out a coloured overlay assessment, where different coloured overlays are tried over text to see whether reading becomes more comfortable. If a particular colour appears to help, we may suggest using an overlay for a short period while reading, noting any changes in comfort or concentration.

Colorimetry assessment

For some patients, a more detailed colorimetry assessment may be beneficial. This involves identifying a precise tint that is tailored specifically to the individual. The colour selected through colourimetry is often different from the overlay colour and is far more accurate. If appropriate, this assessment may lead to precision tinted spectacle lenses being prescribed. These lenses offer the benefit of continuous support, whether reading from a book, working on a screen, or looking at classroom boards, making them a more practical and convenient option than overlays alone.
