Caring for young eyes

Good eyesight plays a vital role in your child’s development, learning and confidence. That’s why we recommend regular eye examinations from an early age, even before your child starts school. Children don’t always realise they have a vision problem, so regular checks are the best way to make sure their eyes are healthy and working well.

NHS-funded eye examinations for children

Children under 16, and those under 19 in full-time education, are entitled to free NHS eye examinations. This includes the same level of professional care as a private appointment. During the test, our optometrists tailor each step to your child’s age and understanding, using pictures, lights and letters to keep the process engaging and comfortable. We take our time to explain everything in a calm, reassuring way so you and your child always know what’s happening.

Support for short-sighted children

If your child is becoming short-sighted (myopic), we can offer specialist myopia management solutions designed to help slow down the progression of their prescription as they grow. These options include advanced spectacle lenses and contact lenses that are safe and effective for children.  You can learn more on our Myopia Management and Contact Lenses pages. If you’re concerned about your child’s vision, we’re here to help.

Coloured overlay assessments

Some children find reading difficult because words seem to blur, move, or jump on the page. This can sometimes be linked to visual stress, a condition that affects how the brain processes what the eyes see.  At Wickersley Eye Clinic, we offer coloured overlay assessments to help identify whether a specific colour filter can make reading more comfortable and improve concentration. During the assessment, your child will try different coloured overlays while reading to see which provides the clearest, most relaxed vision.  If a suitable colour is found, we can offer advice on how to use it effectively, helping to make reading a more enjoyable experience both at school and at home. You can learn more on our colorimetry page.
